Pupils' gift from reading partners

SWAFFHAM-BASED builder Mansell Construction Services had a special treat in store for pupils from the town's first and nursery school who have been doing well at reading.

Christmas presents were recently handed out to youngsters from Year Two, who have been getting weekly one-to-one support in reading with a volunteer “reading partner” from the firm on the town’s EcoTech Business Park.

Mansell is one of three firms involved in the Reading Partners Initiative, which started four years ago at the White Cross Road school. It helps to raise standards of literacy and boost the children’s self-esteem.

Headteacher Mrs Catherine Taylor said: “We really value and enjoy having reading partners from the three local businesses come into the school.

“With thanks to their help, reading standards have increased throughout and we feel their support is very beneficial to the children as they are able to read on a one-to-one basis more frequently.”

Reading partner Mrs Tanya Newton, from Mansell, said: “I thoroughly enjoy being part of the Norfolk Reading Partnership by supporting Swaffham First School and find it very rewarding to see such an improvement in the children’s reading ability.

“It really is a pleasure to work for a company that is enthusiastic about giving something back to the community.”
