Pupils learn to save lives

ST GERMANS Primary School has become one of the first in West Norfolk to teach its pupils life-saving skills.

The school is taking part in the Heartstart UK scheme, co-ordinated by the British Heart Foundation, which teaches ordinary people what to do in emergency situations.

Three members of staff have already received Heartstart training and they will now begin teaching youngsters at the school, and partnership school Magdalen Primary, the simple skills that can save lives.

The scheme was officially launched by paramedic Jean Reynolds, Heartstart co-ordinator for Norfolk, who gave pupils a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) demonstration.

Science co-ordinator Mrs Yvonne Skillern said pupils of all ages would be able to get involved, learning skills ranging from how to dial 999 to CPR.

She added: “The children are all very enthusiastic. They can’t wait to get started and I can’t wait to begin teaching them.”

The school also hopes to raise money for a defibrilator and eventually train staff, pupils and members of the community in its use.
