Pupils tuck into extra school time

NORTH Wootton Primary School is leading the way in extended care locally, with almost one in three of its pupils attending breakfast or after-school clubs.

And a covered outdoor play area, introduced last year for children in the Foundation Stage, has opened up opportunities for more role play, such as at the beach, under the sea and in the garden centre.

Headteacher Jonathan Williams said: “Since we opened our breakfast club in September 2006, followed by our after school club in January, more and more parents, carers and children are taking advantage of the on-site clubs, offering fun and stimulating activities while providing good quality, affordable child care for children who attend our school.

“We are the only school in Lynn offering this range of extended care and we have up to 30 per cent of pupils take part in one of our provisions each day, which is absolutely amazing.

“Run by school staff, these clubs offer a welcome extension to the day for parents and carers, making it possible to juggle busy lives knowing the children are in a safe, friendly and welcoming environment.”

Mr Williams said these clubs were separately inspected as part of the school’s recent Ofsted inspection and described as an exceptionally friendly environment with a real buzz.

Now the school wants to offer an even wider range of extra services.

It recently extended its after school club’s opening times until 6pm, and has up to 35 children attending.

The breakfast club runs from 8am and attracts between 30 and 45 children daily.

A reception after school club, running during the autumn term, provides a gentle way for Reception-age children to prepare for full-time education from January by taking part in stimulating and creative activities.

holiday club

Later this year, there are plans to introduce holiday clubs to provide greater flexibility for parents and carers.

Mr Williams said the new covered outdoor area enabled children to take part in creative activities, including messy play and looking after plants they have helped to grow.

The school’s Ofsted report described provision in the Foundation Stage as “outstanding”, and the head said: “We are committed to building on this success in the future.”
