QEH: Visitor ban continues
ALL WARDS at Lynn's Queen Elizabeth Hospital will remain closed to visitors until further notice, it was announced yesterday.
The visiting ban was introduced last Monday following a widespread
outbreak of norovirus, the winter vomiting bug.
A number of wards remain closed to new admissions and some non-urgent operations have been temporarily cancelled.
The situation was discussed yesterday and is due to be reviewed
on Friday.
Director of operations, Mark Henry, said: "The decision to
prevent visitors from going on to the wards was taken in view of
the severity of the diarrhoea and sickness outbreak, which is widespread
in the community and has affected more than 60 patients and 50 staff since it began at the end of November.
"The hospital is easily affected as people are often unaware they
are carrying the virus until it's too late and they have passed it on.
We appreciate the decision to close to visitors may seem drastic but our intention is to stop this particularly nasty bug from spreading. We are certain people will appreciate this decision is made with the welfare of their loved ones in mind.
"We have to put the welfare of our patients and staff first."
Outpatient clinics, the Arthur Levin Day Surgery Centre and Accident and Emergency remain open.
Last week chief executive Nerissa Vaughan thanked staff for working longer and harder over the last few weeks, when the hospital "under extreme pressure" due to norovirus and allegations about Macmillan nurse Sara Dale.
