QEH turbine gets approval

APPROVAL has finally been given for a state-of-the-art wind turbine in the grounds of Lynn's Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

The turbine will dramatically cut carbon emissions and save the hospital an estimated 20,000 a year in energy costs.

It is the first public sector Merchant Wind power scheme in the UK.

The turbine was approved after an appeal by green energy company Ecotricity was upheld.

The decision comes after extensive technical, environmental and public

consultation on factors including noise, visual impact, health and safety.

Each year the turbine will generate 18 per cent of the hospital's electricity consumption and save an estimated 700 tonnes of Co2 emissions. It will have a maximum height of 80m to tip.

Dale vince, MD of Ecotricity, said: "Hospitals are all about making people better and it's fitting that we're now able to install a windmill at this hospital which will help improve the health of

the planet at the same time."

Barbara Cummings, Director of performance and Informatics at the QEH,

said: "We are proud to be amongst the leaders in public sector organisations in using wind power.

"The turbine will allow us to make savings on our energy costs that we can reinvest in services for our patients."
