"Crazee" time at North Lynn

IT was cool, it was "crazee" and hundreds of youngsters will remember North Lynn carnival for years to come.

An estimated 2,000 to 2,500 people enjoyed the fun-filled day, with started with a parade of floats and continued with sports, games, entertainment and a barbecue at Lynnsport.

The event was organised by North Lynn Community Association with the help of a grant from the Local Network Fund for children and young people.

Association present Bill Guyan said members had checked back over the years and found the last time an event was organised especially for local youngsters was the Queen's Silver Jubilee 30 years ago.

Schools attended by North Lynn children were also invited to become involved, opening up the carnival to pupils in Lynn and Gaywood.

Mr Guyan said every child who attended was entitled to a free badge with the carnival logo, a free hot dog or burger and a free drink.

The parade attracted about seven floats including Highgate Infant School, St Edmund's Community School, sea cadets and air cadets. The Downham Marquettes Majorettes also took part in the procession.

Mr Guyan said: "There were crowds of people along the way, all enjoying the parade."

Events at Lynnsport were opened by former borough mayor Mrs Ann Clery-Fox and included a football knockout competition and running races for all ages with medals for everyone taking part.

Inside, Mr Andy Graham staged a conert featuring four young bands, Cut the Mustard, Showerinacan, Minority and Stone Pony.

Mr Guyan said an even better "cool, crazee carnival" was planned for next year and more schools would be invited to take part.

He urged anyone in the local community with good organisational skills to join the committee to help plan and stage next year's event.
