Raising (funds for) the roof at Feltwell's historic church
THE Friends of St Mary's Church, Feltwell, were out in force on Sunday when an autumn craft fair and art exhibition was held to raise funds for the church roof.
The event, at Porter’s Barn, Grange Farm, Old Methwold Road, included sales of tea towels and the village eco-shopping bags and hopes to have raised around 2,000.
The group, formed earlier this year, is raising funds for the restoration and upkeep of the Grade I listed church after a near-miss disaster when a large piece of roof timber fell at a wedding, narrowly missing the bride and groom.
Chairman Terrence Shapland said the church was historically important with the oldest part dating back around 600 years.
Also unique to St Mary’s is the only example in the UK of nine stained-glass windows which include a special red-coloured glass usually found only in cathedrals in Europe.
The roof will cost 200,000 to repair and, although a bid for funding from English Heritage and similar organisations is being made, funds still have to be raised.
Mr Shapland was delighted with turnout at the fair, which he estimated to be in excess of 500.
It is now hoped a similar event may be held in future.
