Recycled fat is generating WN power

COOKING oil can now be recycled in Norfolk and used to generate electricity.

Residents can take used oil to any Norfolk County Council recycling centre, including Lynn's Horsleys Fields, and dispose of it in special containers for re-use.

The county council has teamed up with fuel firm Living Fuels, in Hockwold, near Brandon, in the belief enough oil to create energy for a town the size of Cromer is usually dumped in Norfolk each year.

Living Fuels has developed a unique process to purify and convert used vegetable-based cooking oils into biofuel to generate electricity.

Cabinet member for environment and waste Mr Ian Monson said: "Householders have often asked what to do with used cooking oil and I'm sure many will welcome the new service. We're delighted to be able to offer a local solution to a waste that has been very difficult to get rid of, particularly in small amounts, and to know that it can be used to produce green electricity is a tremendous bonus."
