Recycling a hit in WN
THIS is the mountain of recyclable waste expected to make January a record-breaking month for green bin collections in West Norfolk.
Householders now seem more than ever to be truly in the spirit of recycling and crews at the Hamlin Way recycling collection centre at Lynn's Hardwick Narrows Industrial Estate have been snowed under with reusable waste.
January last year marked the first time that more than 1,000 tonnes of waste was collected in green bins around the borough, but that figure was duplicated again and again as the year went on.
Figures for December, which are traditionally lower than average due to reduced waste collections over Christmas, are not yet in, but in October 1,030 tonnes was collected and in November 1,027 tonnes.
West Norfolk Council's waste and recycling manager Barry Brandford said: "We are delighted with how people have responded to recycling over the Christmas period and are expecting this January will be a record month in the green bins of West Norfolk.
"We are incredibly busy and we have crews working very, very hard to ensure we collect all the recycling we can. We have had lots of people asking for larger bins and we are delighted to be able to give them these."
Cabinet member for environment, Councillor Brian Long, said in the first full year all households have had a green bin it shows people are embracing them. He added: "The transfer station was nearly full over Christmas which is a very good sign. It's good to see that much coming in from the public and is absolutely superb."
