Regulars help our troops in Afghanistan
KIND-HEARTED regulars at a Marshland pub have been sending tasty parcels to homesick troops in Afghanistan.
A group of volunteers at the Marshland Arms, Marshland St James, has been raising money and making up goody bags for the soldiers, including sweets, chocolate and crisps.
Bar manager Mr Andy Duncan Gibson, one of the main instigators of the project said: “It started when a lad who lives in the village, Douglas Hook, came into the pub shortly after he passed out with the paratroopers.
“When he went out to Afghanistan for six months, we started sending out parcels for him and the rest of his platoon.”
The paratroopers returned home around a month ago, but the group decided to carry on and now sends goodies to the soldiers in 42 Commando, which includes an old school friend of Private Hook.
He added: “We just put silly little things in the parcels, things they can’t get out there, like Pot Noodles, crisps, sweets, Marmite and Tabasco sauce. We have had a letters from some of the guys to show their appreciation.”
Marshland St James Primary is helping, with pupils set to bring in items for future parcels. The pub has also raised money for St Dunstan’s, Brighton, a rehabilitation centre for blinded troops, and the Help for Heroes charity. Call the pub on 01945 430319.
