Rehab offer for shot Lynn soldier
AN EX-SERVICEMEN has offered shot Royal Marine Matt Kingston a year's free use of his gym to get fit again, after reading about his injuries in the Lynn News.
Steve Tibbs, owner of Persona-Fit, in St James Street, Lynn, wanted to extend the kind of community support to injured Lance Corporal Kingston that he witnessed in America during his 15-year military career with the Royal Auxiliary Air Force.
L/Cpl Kingston (22) was hoping to return to his West Lynn home yesterday from Birmingham's Selly Oak hospital where he has been recovering since being shot in the ankle while on a patrol to defend Kajaki dam in the Afghan province of Helmand on November 4.
Gulf war veteran Mr Tibbs, of Walpole Highway, said: "The support the Americans give their servicemen is an embarrassment to the British. You walk down the street there and strangers come up to shake your hand. Here it is completely different.
"I read about Matt and he can come here any time to help with his rehabilitation."
L/Cpl Kingston said: "It's an amazing offer and I appreciate it more than anything."
Surgeons have built a metal frame around ex-Downham schoolboy L/Cpl Kingston's shattered ankle in a bid to repair the joint, but the long term outlook is not yet known. He is likely to face a year of operations and rehabilitation and will return to Birmingham in eight weeks for a review.
