Renewed call for Lynn gates after graffiti

RESIDENTS of Lynn's Pilot Street have made a renewed plea for gates to help stop their lives becoming a "living hell".

It was last July when the Lynn News reported a gating order was being made by Norfolk County Council's cabinet to allow a gate or gates to be put up between Pilot Street and John Kennedy Road to stop a short alley being used as a shortcut by those leaving Zoots nightclub.

The measures were being put in place by the Safer West Norfolk Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership and it was then hoped would be in place within "three to four" months.

However, the gates have not appeared – leaving residents worried.

They are also concerned because Zoots unexpectedly shut in January – and don't want authorities to think there is now no need for the gates which, although not solving all the problems, would solve many of the problems, after all.

One Pilot Street resident, who did not want to be identified, told the Lynn News this week that current problems in the area included graffiti.

"I am completely fed up with it. We have had eight or nine 'taggings' in the last few days, including St Nicholas' Chapel and we get vandalism along here.

"Tagging a church is the last straw.

"I have lived in several cities and towns and Lynn is remarkably free of graffiti - this needs to be stopped."

He is concerned about the problems and says Zoots' closure is not the issue as most of the problems happen during daylight hours and the alley gate was still needed.

The resident said he had not phoned police, adding: "The only time police were interested was when I found a bag of syringes.

"We have rubbish put over our walls, vandalism and all sorts but no-one seems bothered."

A Norfolk County Council spokesman said : "The legislation which allows us to close part of the highway is exhaustive and requires two time periods for the public to register objections. The first has passed without objection and the second is drawing to a close.

"If all passes quietly, we would hope to have the gates in place about May time."

He reassured residents Zoots' closure would not affect the proposals.

However, once the area was gated off the situation would need to be reviewed in future.

A Norfolk police spokesman said: "We would encourage anyone to report any act of vandalism or anti-social behaviour."

Safer Neighbourhoods Teams were in place in Lynn and surrounding areas to deal with such incidents and could be contacted by ringing 0845 456 4567.
