Rethink on hotel plan for Lynn's S Quay

DEVELOPERS behind plans for a flagship hotel at the former grain silo on Lynn's waterfront are considering whether the scheme should continue.

The Hertfordshire-based Inner Circle Group is in the process of scaling back its plans for a major development on the South Quay which could include a hotel and apartment complex, shops, a restaurant and caf.

But it has since emerged the hotel element of the scheme may no longer go ahead in light of the fact a similar facility has been proposed as part of Lynn's multi-million pound marina project.

Inner Circle Group development manager Lee Fitzpatrick told the Lynn News: "In the marina development there are plans for an 80 to 100-bed hotel, that would affect our scheme quite dramatically.

"Lynn needs a new hotel, but I am not sure if it needs two. We are now looking at the scheme and the possibility of a development without a hotel.

"We have not ruled it out as such but we do not want to build a hotel if a larger one is included as part of the marina."

News of the possible hotel withdrawal was included in a report due to go before a joint meeting of West Norfolk Council's community and culture, regeneration and environment, and resources and performance panels today.

The report states: "The council continues to meet with the owners of the grain silos site to ensure a mutually-beneficial development is worked towards.

"The owners of the site are in the process of amending their proposals after a significant public consultation exercise.

"It is very likely that the planned development will not now include a hotel which will now be included in the proposals for the Waterside Regeneration Project at Boal Quay."

Last month the Lynn News reported how the Inner Circle Group had bowed to public pressure and scaled back its designs for the overhaul of the grain silo site.

Architects were working on reducing the nine-storey design by up to two storeys, adding an extra floor dedicated to parking and creating a different look to make it fit in better with its surroundings.

The council report also reveals the authority has purchased the J and I Motors site, on Boal Street, as part of the Waterside Regeneration Project and work to acquire other parcels of land is in progress.
