Rethink on South Lynn roundabout

PLANNERS have been forced to rethink the design of a new roundabout in South Lynn.

Bus drivers have been struggling to negotiate the mini-roundabout at the junction of Wisbech Road and Saddlebow Road because of the cramped layout.

One Lynn News reader became concerned after noticing a bus he had been following had to mount the kerb at the side of the road to get round.

The damaged kerb had already had to be reset and needed repairing again.

The managing director of Norfolk Green buses, Ben Colson, met representatives of Norfolk County Council highways department and the contractors for the scheme at the roundabout on Tuesday.

He said he was first alerted when bus drivers reported the grave difficulties they were experiencing at the junction.

He praised the speed at which the site meeting had been arranged and said: "We are now working together to find an acceptable solution, one which will enable the buses to get round while still achieving the objective of improving road safety by slowing down traffic flows." He was confident a solution could be found while the contractors were still working on the site.

Norfolk County Council spokesman John Birchall said: "We have to acknowledge there is a problem. It wasn't intended and we are going to put it right."

Mr Birchall said the re-alignment of the junction was intended to slow down traffic, not to stop it.

"When it's finished it will be perfectly usable by buses and everyone else while at the same time achieving the traffic calming which local people want to see as well," he added.
