Years of hard work paid off for former King Edward VII student Andrew Cole when he was presented with The Queen’s Gold Medal for outstanding A-level results.

The award was made on Sunday at Sandringham.

Andrew, 19, of South Wootton, achieved A grades in biology, physics, chemistry, maths and general studies and is now reading medicine at University College London.

Headteacher at KES Michael Douglass said: “Andrew was a really good student who was very dedicated, committed and focussed and tremendously hard-working. He sets himself really high targets and goals and goes for them.”

Andrew was a student at Lynn KES from Year 7 through to the sixth form and Mr Douglass said: “It’s fantastic to be part of that process.”

Mr Douglass was with Andrew when he received his medal from The Queen and said: “It’s a privilege to be part of this event. Every year it is so special.”

Andrew’s mum Julie Cole said: “It was really surreal being there. We are very proud parents. He has worked really hard all the way through his education. He was thoroughly thrilled when he was told he had won the gold medal.”

Mrs Cole and her husband Paul joined Andrew and Mr Douglass for a private audience with the Queen. Mrs Cole said: “We spoke about the Jubilee year and she made us feel very welcome and special. It was a lovely experience.”

Hundreds greeted The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh as they attended Sandringham church on Sunday. Prince Philip walked from Sandringham House to St Mary Magdalene, while the Queen arrived in a Bentley.

They were joined by Lady Helen Taylor, daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Kent, and the service was led by the Bishop of Chelmsford, the Rt Rev Stephen Cottrell.

The Queen was amused when the Bentley took several goes before it started on the way back.
