Runcton Holme couple 'lucky to be alive'
A MOTORCYCLIST who broke both legs in a near-death crash on the A10 has spoken of his relief at surviving and not leaving his four children orphaned.
Paul Weston (38) was thrown from his motorcycle following a collision with a car at Stow Bardolph last week, which saw him spend three days in intensive care and also left him with a broken arm and a suspected broken pelvis.
His wife Paula, who was riding as a pillion passenger, suffered a broken right leg in the crash and was found wrapped around a tree as emergency services rushed to the scene last Thursday.
Mr Weston, of Runcton Holme, will now spend the next eight weeks at Lynn's Queen Elizabeth Hospital in an attempt to recover from his horrific injuries.
Speaking from his hospital bed he told the Lynn News he was determined to make a full recovery so he can be re-united at home with his wife and children Tanya (15), Billie-Ann (14), Kieran (5) and Jamie-Leigh (2).
Mr Weston said: "I have got four lovely children and they were nearly orphans. This sort of thing brings it all back. I want to see them grow up.
"I see myself as being very lucky to be alive. I have seen the X-rays and have been told that I am very lucky considering the impact I took.
"I always say you should spend that little bit extra on protecting yourself. I spent 320 on a helmet and it has saved my life.
"I had no head injuries what-soever, no headaches or neck trauma, nothing. If I had not spent that extra money I would not be here."
Mr Weston, who has been riding since the age of 16, had been to Hunstanton with some fellow motorcyclists and was returning home via Sandringham, Gayton, Marham, Swaffham and Downham.
The accident happened at around 9pm, when the purple and red Kawasaki ZX6 Ninja he was riding collided with a Toyota 4Runner.
Mr Weston said: "I do not blame the other person, it was an accident and accidents happen. People keep asking me what I am going to do and whether I will ride again.
"I was supposed to be going to Peterborough at the weekend to see Carl Fogarty, but this has put a dampener on that.
"I have had a few little scrapes in the past but this is my first major accident."
Once he is fully recovered Mr Weston is hoping to start a new career as a HGV driver.
He would like to thank the family members and friends who have looked after his children and offered their support while he and his wife have been in hospital.
