School encourages graffiti by its pupils

SOME West Norfolk children are being encouraged to cover one of their school walls with graffiti.

It is a fresh approach to lessons being trailblazed by pupils at South Wootton First School in a new countywide Creative Partnerships initiative.

This is one of 45 Norfolk schools receiving 315,000 cash funding to roll out imaginative creative learning projects this year.

Wootton's Year Two children will work with creative teams including artists and musicians to create a graffiti wall and on Tuesday they met the team who will help them to plan, design and produce the wall and take part in other music and dance projects which form part of the scheme.

"Everyone knows that sometimes what we learn outside the classroom can have an extraordinary impact on our lives," said their headteacher Mrs Carol Mahony. "We want to use this opportunity to take children out of their comfort zone and give them a chance to discover something remarkable about themselves as they set about creating their own graffiti wall"

Creative Partnerships is managed in Norfolk by the Norfolk and Norwich Festival and will involve around 13,000 schoolchildren this year.
