'School? We love it!'

YOUNGSTERS at Hunstanton Infants' School are celebrating after receiving a glowing Ofsted report which noted how much school was actually enjoyed.

Inspectors from Ofsted noted that children “enjoy school enormously”, adding: “The strong focus on pastoral care and on children’s well-being results in happy, well-behaved children who willingly embrace new experiences and challenges.”

The report had particular praise for headteacher Michaela Webb who was appointed three-and-a-half years ago following a difficult period of significant staff changes.

“Parents and governors say the headteacher has ‘turned the school around’,” says the report. “Under the headteacher’s determined leadership, staff share a commitment to doing their best for every child, regardless of their circumstances,” it said.

The report adds staff plan a lively programme of practical and interesting activities, well-suited to children’s needs.

“Children in Reception benefit from good teaching and a wide variety of activities, making good progress.

“Adults give children consistent messages about what is expected of them, and parents are impressed and pleased that their children settle so rapidly.”

Hunstanton Infants, which has 71 pupils, is described as a smaller-than-average infant school, but a good school.

Children made good progress because they were taught well. However, the report said expectations should be shared with the children more regularly within lessons and opportunities for children to become more independent should be further increased.

The report has delighted children, parents, staff and governors at the James Street school.

Chairman of the governors and Norfolk County Council cabinet member for children’s services, Rosalie Monbiot, said: “We are particularly pleased with the inspection.

“We know that we can continue to improve even further and maximise the positive outcomes for all children who attend our school.”

Mrs Webb, who is leaving this month to take up a new post, said: “The children, their families, staff and governors are justifiably proud of their school.”

Areas of development the report highlighted had already been identified with plans being made to address them.
