Youngsters had fun playing in the snow but shoppers had to grit their teeth and bear it yesterday afternoon.

By the evening gritters were out in force and police issued a warning that only essential journeys should be undertaken.

Firefighters were called to the B1145 at Gayton when a Citroen slipped off the road and into a hedge at 7.45am yesterday.

There were no injuries.

Crews were also called to The Causeway, Stow Bridge, at 9.15am after an elderly woman slipped under her car.

The woman suffered minor injuries.
