So proud at Downham
DOWNHAM remembered The Fallen with "sadness, humility and pride" on Sunday.
About 70 people attended the 11am “pause and remember” ceremony beside the clock in the town square.
In the afternoon, more than 400 residents participated by watching, joining the procession or worshipping in St Edmund’s Church.
Special guests included West Norfolk Mayor Mrs Kathy Mellish, RAF Marham commanding officer Group Captain Phil Osborn, South West Norfolk MP Mr Christopher Fraser, Downham Mayor Mr John Doyle, Brigadier David Potts and Downham Royal British Legion representative Major Bill Kerr.
The chairman of the town’s joint remembrance committee, Pat Roberts, praised the support from local people. “The church was bursting and the number of children and young people participating was fantastic.”
Mrs Roberts said many people praised a moving speech made by Mr Doyle at the 11am ceremony.
He stressed the young age of most of the The Fallen. “They were in their late teens or twenties and they had their whole lives before them. But they were where they were when the bell tolled and they did their duty. Because of that, it is with a mixture of sadness, humility and pride that we stand here today and say we will remember them,” Mr Doyle told the crowd.
