South Lynn youth club success

ORGANISERS are celebrating the early success of a new youth club in South Lynn which has seen numbers swell since its launch in July.

The club was formed after residents told their Safer Neighbourhoods Team that youngsters in the area were bored and needed something to do.

With just 15 members on its opening night the club now welcomes more than 40 youngsters who are enjoying weekly activities such as games, sports and arts and crafts.

The venture is run by local residents and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) and is aimed at seven to 13-year-olds.

PCSO Ian Prentice said: "Getting the club off the ground took several months but the level of support shown by parents and local businesses since its launch has been phenomenal.

"The children obviously enjoy it because they keep coming back, bringing friends with them."

Thanks to a Government community development grant, and part of the profit made from weekly membership fees, 20 lucky youngsters have been given the chance to enjoy a subsidised trip to Pleasurewood Hills.

The club was also able to run a word search competition for children under the age of ten in the community newsletter published by the South Lynn Forum.

The competition was won by Lilly Stewart (9), who was presented with a 20 voucher sponsored by newsagent Stuart Hall, of Halls Newsagents in Saddlebow Road.

Future plans for the club include regular discos, a Hallowe'en party, trips and competitions.

For more information on the club contact the South and West Lynn Safer Neighbourhoods Team on 0845 456 4567.
