Southery now on the world-wide web
Councillor Marilyn Robinson chaired the cold, but well attended, meeting in the village hall on Monday, February 2. Councillor John Hobden reported that the Southery website was now in operation.
Local information will be displayed and minutes of Parish Council meetings published once they have been signed as correct. Visit www.southeryparish.org
The council noted correspondence from a former headmaster of the Southery Primary School (and previous parish councillor), concerning recent discussion about the ownership of the Southery old church ruins and surrounds.
The former councillor feels that similar discussions were mooted – and minuted – at parish council meetings during the early 1970's period. The clerk agreed to sort through the previous meeting records in the search for enlightenment.
The council accepted the quotation of 3,850 from Mr G. Lewis for the grass cutting and maintenance of the designated village public areas for the 2009 season.
The contracted figure detailed the cutting programme and clearing of grass for the accepted growing season. Mr Lewis will also undertake the necessary odd job tasks as requested, at an hourly rate.
The Highways Department has presented the council with a detailed plan of the planned works required to repair and re-surface pavements and upgrade surface drainage in Westgate Street. The project should commence early in the year.
The council has received several queries about the legality of the establishment of some portable buildings on land west of Common Lane.
The clerk will ascertain from Anglia Water, the Planning Authority and the Environmental Health Authority whether reported water connections are legal and if "change of usage" of agricultural land is involved.
Several residents of Recreation Drive and village hall patrons have complained about dog fouling on pavements, road surfaces and pedestrian areas.
The council records all complaints and detailed reports of fouling offences can be made to the Borough Dog Wardens department by vigilant residents.
The council noted questions from local walkers about rights of way and any recognised footpaths on the area East of Ringmore Road towards Little London and the Feltwell Road.
It seems that the Ordnance Survey Pathfinder 921 Southery and Methwold map (scale 2 in to a mile) may have the details subject to some local knowledge.
There have been several local complaints about heavy goods vehicles driving from Feltwell Road northwards into Lynn Road and swinging across the pedestrian pavement and on to the grass of the Wearing (village green).
The council can record the complaint and hope that registration numbers of any offending vehicle can be recorded. There was general agreement about the inadequacy of the local road system and the strain imposed on the system by heavy vehicles often travelling too fast for local conditions.
The council will again request Norfolk Traffic Police to check village traffic.
Local motorists should ensure that they park at the roadside legally.Vehicles half-way on pavements are only encouraging heavy vehicles to speed through the village.
The council recorded their appreciation of the latest Borough road sweeping operation completed at Feltwell Road and their thanks to Granta Housing Association for the cleaning works done at their Westgate Street site.
There has still been no more feedback from the bus company concerning requests for services through Feltwell Road.
The clerk will contact the relevant authorities concerning failing street lights at Common Lane, Churchgate Street and Lynn Road and potholes at Common Lane, Upgate Street, Lynn Road and Feltwell Road, the exposed manhole at Common Lane and a collection of random road works warning signs left scattered around the area.
The clerk will also request residents to trim hedges where they overhang pedestrian pavements at the Trapps Gate footpath and exit from the Jolly Farmers pub.
The clerk will check with waste services operators for information about collection cycles at the bottle bank. Borough re-organisation of rubbish bin locations in village public places is still ongoing.
Next parish council meeting is at 7pm, March 2 at the village hall.
