Southery welcomes news of more police
SOUTHERY has welcomed news that the village is to get a new police constable.
The November and December parish council meetings covered a good range of current council affairs.
Councillor Cornwell reported from the November Downham Police public meeting, that a new police constable has been appointed for Southery, operating from downham police station, and there will be community police officers on beat duty
Granta Housing Association has agreed to keep the parish council informed on plans to regulate housing conditions at Halls close and Westgate Street.
Negotiations for the establishment of a bottle bank are still in hand, the only available site appears to be inside the playing field gates.
Street lights on Lynn Road although recently adjusted are still faulty and have been reported.
The "Smile" speeding awareness organisation has confirmed that there will be a survey taken on local traffic control needs.
The council recorded the establishment of the 30mph speed limit signage and the welcoming/warning signs at the village approach.
A donation of 25 was made for the Poppy Appeal.
The replacement village sign will be revealed on Saturday, January 12, and blessed by the Rev David Evans and the Rev Andrew Sankey.
The sign will be placed in its original position.
Local resident Mrs Sue Jennings agreed to plant trees, shrubs and spring bulbs at village open areas, with support from parish council, borough council and local neighbouring land owners.
The parish council rejected planning permission for 1 Westgate Street.
The following plans were submitted from Highways: No heavy goods vehicles, except delivery, to access Westgate Street; provision of a right-hand lane northwards on the A10, to allow HGV access at Lynn Road village north access; village south access unavailable to HGVs.
The council noted that there are no plans to ease the heavy traffic flow on Feltwell Road; the clerk will contact highways to discuss this.
Cllr Robinson agreed to contact the highway engineer with regards to the original cobblestone kerbs of Westgate Street, which have been covered by surfacing in several places, as well as several other instances of faded road markings and damaged cats-eyes, throughout the village. Potholes at Upgate Street, Common Lane and Campsey Road will be reported.
The clerk reported on the completion of the Halls Close/Feltwell Road footpath, and council authorised payment for the contract. The council will request the footpath to continue through to the edge of Halls Close.
The highways department has been requested to make periodic checks on weight limits of heavy goods vehicles on local roads.
There have been complaints about roadside vehicle repair operations on village roads.The borough council requires written information from residents before investigating the situation.
The council will contact the borough council to report that Ringmore Road was missed out during the road sweeping service.
Cllr Copsey expressed concern about the development of a paper mill in Lynn, and the implications of its water usage on the drainage system in West Norfolk. The parish council will contact the drainage board.
The parish council will check the legality and potential health hazard by vegetable sales at a Feltwell Road property. Complaints have also received about bright lights from this property which shine into oncoming traffic.
The council will offer Circus Foolhardy the usual playing field site for a June 2008 date.
Council has been invoiced for the completed work at the village hall, and agreed the payment of 1,000.
The council will apply for a 20,000 precept budget for the 2008 financial year.
The old children's slide has been considered irreparable, and there is currently insufficient finance available for a replacement.
A local donation of 10 for the playing field fund was noted.
Village maintenance work in hand, to be completed, weather permitting, before the spring, includes painting the railings at Trapp's Gate, Playing Fields, Halls Gate footpath and the War Memorial, the benches at The Wearing and the cemetery shed.
Playing Field Support Group report that the temporary repairs at the hut are under way.
The clerk is to contact property owners in Churchgate Street about over hanging brambles, and also owners of the derelict church Lane property, to attend to the overgrown state of the property and the rat infestation.
The electricity authority has been asked to tidy its hedge at the village hall entrance.
The council noted that Mr J. Osler had cleared laurels at the cemetery.
