Springwood gets ready to make music

LYNN'S Springwood High School will come alive with the sound of the region's best young music-makers at an event this weekend.

More than 300 musicians from across Norfolk and Suffolk will perform in the Lynn Festival of Music for Youth, one of 57 regional festivals in the national Music for Youth competition.

The festival is held in collaboration with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, with funding from Music for Youth, the London-based charity set up to provide music-making opportunities for children aged up to 18.

Of the ten groups performing at the school on Sunday, March 2, four are from Springwood itself – the concert band, senior choir, Choirboys 2! choir and the Imagination choir.

The only other West Norfolk entrant is Lynn’s cello ensemble, Celling Together.

The next stage of the contest is a National Festival of Music for Youth at Birmingham, from Monday to Saturday, July 7 to 12, when the best 300 groups from across the country will perform at venues, including the Symphony Hall.

Thirty of those will then be invited to perform at the world-acclaimed Music for Youth Schools Prom at London’s Royal Albert Hall from Monday to Wednesday, November 10, 11 and 12.

The regional festivals have been running for 35 years, and this year marks the 22nd year Springwood has taken part.

The school’s director of music Robert Galliard said the school has been able to host the festival for the last seven years, thanks to funding it receives through the specialist arts status awarded by the Government in September 2000.

“In the past we’ve had to travel to Ipswich or Cambridge so it’s much easier to have it here and it’s a great event for the school,” he said.

The school band has been selected for the national festival on several occasions and Mr Galliard is keeping his fingers crossed for yet more success this year.

Members of the public are able to attend the regional festival at Springwood, being held in the Concert Hall between 10.30am and 2pm. Admission is free. For more information contact the school on 01553 773393.
