St Germans' play area launched

ST GERMANS' new play area was buzzing with excited youngsters on Wednesday, all eager to try out the new equipment for the first time.

A huge cheer went up as villager Valerie Reynolds cut the tape and declared the 50,000 play area open.

As well as the children, including pupils from the school next door, the opening was attended by parish and borough councillors, representatives from other organisations who provided grant aid, including Norfolk Rural Community Council, Waste Recycling Environmental and the Local Action Group, the police community team and the company which installed the equipment.

"It was an impressive turn out, a real community event," said parish council clerk, Elaine Oliver.

She explained that most of the cost of the new play area, which is next to the Memorial Hall, was covered by grant aid and the shortfall of 1,000 was made up by the parish council.

She said old equipment which was rusting and dangerous had been taken away and replaced by facilities for all age groups. They include a basketball concrete pad, a multi-tower and a fenced-off toddler area.

The parish council had requested that instead of bringing in a celebrity to open the play area, it should be Mrs Reynolds who did the honours.

"She has lived here for a long time, she is interested and involved in parish activities and everyone knows her. We thought it would be very appropriate for her to cut the ribbon," said Mrs Oliver.

She added that the success of the venture was underlined by another local resident and mum who had contacted the parish councillors to thank them for their efforts.

Her message read: "On Wednesday I heard the loveliest sound I have heard in a long time... happy children enjoying themselves on the new play park. It was a really heartwarming sight and sound."
