Strong support for postal strike
STRIKING postal workers were reported to be picketing main sorting offices across West Norfolk yesterday after the latest wave of action started at 3am.
Support for the Communication Workers’ Union action was said to be especially strong in Lynn. Area delivery representative Adam Eates said only five employees out of 125 had gone in to work at the Austin Fields office where picketing is due to continue round the clock until the strike ends at 3am tomorrow.
Mr Eates said support was also strong in sorting offices around the area.
“In Swaffham, only four out of 22 went in. In Downham, it was 11 out of about 30 and in Hunstanton it was three out of about 20,” he said.
Deliveries of mail had also been affected across the area.
Mr Eates said his members had been encouraged by the response to their action from the public.
“People understand that it’s not just about our pay and pensions. It’s about what the Royal Mail is trying to do to the postal service,” he said.
He added that talks aimed at settling the dispute had continued until 10.30pm on Sunday and were due to resume yesterday.
Royal Mail has condemned the two-day strike this week and a similar action on Thursday and Friday last week. A spokesman said the service had to modernise to compete in an increasingly tough market.
