Super Kids: Kevin owes it to army of helpers

A NORTH Creake man who suffers seizures has his own "army" of youngsters on hand to help.

Kevin Raisborough (64), has nominated 13 local children for a Lynn News Super Kids award for their vigilance and quick-thinking when he is taken ill.

He explained that ten years ago he suffered a stroke and subsequently started to have sudden fits.

"Wherever I am, I just go and that's it," he said. The seizures can happen at any time and he sometimes suffers three or four a week.

He is a friend to many neighbouring children and they have learned what to do if he is with them when a seizure takes hold or they find him lying unconscious on the ground.

"They have become Kevin's Army," said Mr Raisborough, of Dunns Lane.

The children range in age from nine to 16. "The younger ones think I am asleep when I am ill. The older ones know what is going on," he went on.

All the children know that if he is on his back he must be put into the recovery position. Then they raise the alarm.

"They just run for help or if one of them is on their own they will just shout and shout and shout until someone takes notice. They stay with me until the ambulance arrives and help the crews if they can," said Mr Raisborough.

The children also call on him at home after a seizure to see if he has fully recovered.

"No-one has told them to do it and they have never had any training. They step into a life and death situation every time I have a fit and I can't praise them highly enough. They are stars and I think the world of all of them," he said.

The children are Jack Blades (9), and Clemmy Claxton (12), of Burnham Road, and Conor Welch (16), Kyra Welch (14), Morgana Welch (9), Freddie Mann (11), Edward Mann (12), James Mann (16), Oliver Dewson (9), Jessica and Chloe Dewson (12), Kyle Baker (11), and Chantelle Baker (15), who all live in Dunns Lane.

EXAMPLE

As an example of the help they give him, Mr Raisborough said: "Little Ollie saw me having a fit one day about a year ago and went for help. He came back and brought his mum with him and then went to get my wife. Then he just sat with me and refused to go home for his tea until I woke up."
