Support for Post Office campaign pours in
SUPPORT is pouring in for the Lynn News Save Our Post Office campaign.
Within four days of its launch hundreds of people have already put their names to our petitions and filled in coupons.
It is just one reflection of the shock and outrage boiling in communities across West Norfolk where the Post Office is proposing to axe 19 branches.
Downham – one of the worst affected areas, where two of the town's three post offices face closure – is just one of the places determined to make its voice heard.
Within hours of a Lynn News petition being opened in the Lynn Road store it had 150 signatures.
Sub-postmistress for 22 years Ann Harris said: "People are very angry. They don't want the post office to go. They don't see the need for closure as Downham is growing."
Mrs Harris said the Lynn Road shop will not survive if the post office pulls out, leaving herself and three others out of a job and many customers further away from vital services.
Under the plans, which will see a nationwide cull of 2,500 outlets, Downham will also lose its Railway Road branch, at Swaffham the London Street post office will go and in Fakenham, Wells Road branch will shut.
Lynn's Loke Road branch will be snuffed out, as will village services in Castle Rising, East Walton, Great Walsingham, Holkham, Ringstead, Sporle, Tittleshall and West Walton.
Post offices in Beachamwell, Nordelph, Southery, Welney, Wereham and Wimbostham all face the prospect of closure with a new out-reach service being offered as an alternative.
Some Norfolk county councillors are keen to follow the example of Essex where funding has been poured into maintaining 15 of 31 branches closed last year. However, there is increasing anger over warnings that saving one branch could put another at risk by diluting its business.
Post Office Ltd has previously reported losses of up to 70 million a year and has seen fewer people using its branches as traditional services such as benefit payments are now available in other ways.
A six-week consultation period over the closures is now under way and the Lynn News urges you to take the chance to have your say.
