Sutton Bridge site plan for travellers under attack

OPPOSITION is mounting to plans for a gipsy and travellers' site in Sutton Bridge.

A report examining all eight shortlisted sites, including a stopping place for temporary stays in Wingland, has been prepared by South Holland Council ahead of a special cabinet meeting tomorrow.

The three-week consultation period held by the district council revealed widespread opposition to the plans among residents, but the report says the site “meets the council’s original search criteria.”

Sutton Bridge Town Council outlined a number of objections, including fears relating to crime, a lack of utilities and the impact the site could have on facilities.

The report goes on to say, however: “The site provides a safe environment and, in terms of the council’s search criteria, is considered to have an acceptable relationship with the wider community.”

It continues: “The highways authority has commented that the location provides good-quality access and service road.”

The land, off Centenary Way, is valued at around 25,000 and the overall development costs of providing a stopping place with ten pitches is estimated be more than 280,000, once the site is hooked up to amenities such as electricity.

Should the Wingland site be selected, measures may be needed because it is at risk from flooding, the report said.

South Holland Council received 69 responses to its consultation on the site, including objections from councillors Chris Brewis and Michael Booth, EDF Energy, owners of Sutton Bridge Power Station, and the owners of the Wingland Enterprise Park.

The meeting, which will be webcast from 2pm, will see councillors whittle down the list and select a final three to progress to the next stage, when planning applications will be lodged.
