Sutton Bridge travellers' site objections rejected
CAMPAIGNERS fighting plans for a new gipsy and travellers' site in Sutton Bridge have failed to see the decision overturned.
South Holland Council has rejected calls to reconsider the site and will now press ahead with a planning application for the transient site, earmarked for land off Centenary Way, in Wingland.
A special cabinet meeting was held on Friday to discuss a 12-point objection raised in a call-in notice from councillors Chris Brewis and Michael Booth, who argued the site would put an unacceptable strain on the town's facilities and damage local industry.
The stopping place was selected alongside two permanent sites at Spalding and Holbeach from a shortlist of eight following a three-week consultation period in November and the decision has since caused anger among residents, the parish council and local businesses, who have raised a number of concerns.
But, despite these objections, the cabinet re-affirmed its commitment to the site, which will offer ten pitches for temporary stays.
Councillor Nick Worth said: "If it was a permanent site it would have been a bigger issue for us to consider regarding the impact on the town."
The cabinet also dismissed opposition to the site west of Holbeach, off the A151, which was called in by three other councillors amid concerns about road safety.
