Swaffham’s snow clearing volunteers have been praised by Town Mayor Terry Jennison for their efforts to keep the footways safe to walk on.

Over the past two weeks, the services of the 30-strong squad have been called on most days to ensure snow has been cleared from pavements around the Market Place so that people can continue to shop and get to work.

Mrs Jennison said: “I have been so impressed with them – they have been amazing.

“I am always saying what a lovely town Swaffham is and the people we have here, and this proves it.

“They have been up and out doing this work every day for the love of the town. I can’t thank them enough.”

Retired London firefighter David Strong, 60, from the Heathlands estate in Swaffham, has been one of those regularly turning out to clear the snow in the Market Place.

He said: “The idea was to keep the town centre clear so people could get around it safely and shop, doing the greatest good for the greatest number, and then working out towards the suburbs.

“Some of us can’t make it every day as it depends on what we are doing, but there’s usually between six and a dozen starting out.

“We use the grit bins located around the town which Norfolk County Council highways keep topped up.”

Mr Strong said it was “very rewarding” being thanked by the public for their actions.
