SWAFFHAM: Drink driver was grieving
A driver hit the bottle after news of a double family tragedy, West Norfolk magistrates heard yesterday.
Nora Corcoran, 29, of The Splashes, Castle Acre Road, Swaffham, admitted driving with 100 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath on Christmas Eve. The limit is 35.
She was banned from driving for two years, fined £183 and ordered to pay £20 costs.
Josephine Jones, prosecuting, said Corcoran was seen at 12.45am on the A47 at Swaffham driving without lights. Police followed and saw her car swerve. They indicated to her to stop but she speeded up before turning into The Splashes traveller site, sounding her horn. She stumbled getting out of her car and gave a positive roadside breath test.
Alison Muir, for Corcoran, said her client was of previous good character. Her actions were triggered by grief at the suicide of two of her cousins. Miss Muir said: “She hit the bottle.” When she saw the police, she panicked.
Corcoran was bitterly sorry for putting others at risk by drink driving and for causing difficulties for her three young sons, said Miss Muir.
West Norfolk Police Christmas Drink Drive Campaign, from December 1 to January 1, resulted in 26 drivers being charged. Two other motorists are still on bail.
