Swaffham: Legion ladies have 'sax appeal'
SWAFFHAM'S X Factor star Cyril Grant entertained members and guests when the town's Royal British Legion women's section recently celebrated its 80th anniversary.
The grandfather and former carpenter, from Mill Farm Nurseries, who got through to the final 50 contestants in the last series of the highly-rated ITV1 show, played his saxophone, sang and did some tap-dancing at the organisation's May meeting in Valentine Barker Court, Swaffham.
About 50 people, including eight members from Elmham RBL women's section and four men from Swaffham RBL branch, joined in the celebrations, where there was a special 80th anniversary cake to mark the occasion.
Secretary Frances Barker said Swaffham RBL women's section was formed in 1929 and currently has a paid-up membership of 37, so it was doing "very well" compared with some branches.
Members help with the Legion's annual Poppy Appeal and last month raised about 250 through a sponsored walk for their section's benevolent fund.
They also hold fundraising coffee mornings at the Methodist Churchrooms in Swaffham.
Meetings are held every second Tuesday in the month, at 2.30pm, at Valentine Barker Court.
