Swaffham loyalty to build their future on

SWAFFHAM business Mansell Construction has started its centenary celebrations by making long-service awards to eight staff who have put in 205 years between them.

A presentation ceremony was held at the company's headquarters on the town's EcoTech Business Park on January 18, with regional managing director Dean Burgess and human resources officer Anne Toone making the awards.

The longest length of service had been clocked up by managing quantity surveyor Paul Nally, with 35 years, and site manager Mick Cooling had the shortest term, with 20 years.

The other six – contracts manager Barry Fox, direct labour manager David Payne, site managers Tony Lusher and John Gosling, plumber Raoul Philips and site operative Barry Gill – each had 25 years' service.

Over the years, they have been involved in a wide variety of projects, including works at Lakenheath and Mildenhall air bases and at schools across Norfolk. In Swaffham, they have been involved in building Plowright Medical Centre on the same business park and Hamond's High School's current 10 million revamp.

Mr Cooling, who joined the company as an apprentice carpenter, said: "Mansell has given me opportunities beyond my original expectations. I enjoy the whole construction experience and why move companies when you are happy where you are?"

Mr Burgess said: "There is tremendous loyalty within the Mansell team. Long-serving members of staff are a testimony to 'Mansell culture' and demonstrate a happy and committed workforce. This is no doubt a major factor in the success of our business over the last 100 years."

Mansell Construction hopes to raise 1 million for charity this year to mark its centenary. A company spokesman said: "We will be releasing more details about this at a later date."
