Swaffham: Numerous positives in the town

It is fair to say that Swaffham, together with other market towns, is suffering from the economic recession, with the number of shops closing down.

But there are numerous positives within the town; Abels has sufficient confidence in the town to start their housing development on Castle Acre Road.

New office suits have been built on the EcoTech Business Park, with new tenants.

The completion of new units will allow start up businesses to develop on the business park.

Iceland will commence business in the vacant Woolworths shop in the summer, which will replace some of the jobs that have been lost, plus there has been fresh interest in other vacant premises.

According to local estate agents, houses are continuing to sell, despite the depressed mortgage market.

Four new restaurants have started up over the past few months, with a high degree of success.

EXTRA TRADE

Ashley White, the manager of the Horse and Groom, stated that his restaurant is steadily increasing trade, and is expanding the opening hours.

Such is his confidence in Swaffham, that he is refurbishing the bedrooms over the coming months to increase his hotel capacity.

Kay Wells has recently taken over and refurbished the Market Cross, and is developing a caf culture with indoor and outdoor seating. She also stated that she has taken on more staff to cope with the demand: "I have to pinch myself sometimes with the success of the business, Swaffham is such a nice town, and deserves to be successful."

The town has just seen the launch of Norfolk's Russian restaurant, Rasputin, where it is now advisable to book due to the high demand, especially at weekends.

Nico, an Italian restaurant, opened its doors for the first time just before Christmas, and has seen the restaurant fully booked most weekends.

'THRILLED'

Nico and Carmine, brothers who moved from Bedford, have employed four part-time waitresses and are looking at employing a commis chef in the future. Carmine said that they were both thrilled with the move to Swaffham and the success of the restaurant, and thanked the people of Swaffham for their support.
