Swaffham: Shambles toilets are at risk again
THE future of Swaffham's public toilets has been thrown into doubt after councillors raised concerns about the spiralling cost of providing the facilities.
The toilets, which are based in The Shambles, have been subjected to several vandalism attacks in recent months with Swaffham Town Council having to pick up the bill.
The authority has also had to cover general running costs and maintenance bills.
At its meeting last Wednesday members were told there had been problems with the hand wash units which needed to be serviced, which will cost 498 plus parts and VAT.
Deputy town clerk Michelle Meyrick told the Lynn News that every time a problem arises the whole toilet block has to be closed and on some occasions the call-out cost can be 500.
She said members agreed to pay for the service of the hand wash units but will discuss the long-term future of the toilets at a future meeting.
The town council took over responsibility for the toilets in 2007 after a deal was struck with Breckland Council.
They re-opened in March 2008 following a 115,000 revamp and the town council was awarded 130,000 from Breckland to help with maintenance costs over the following ten years.
The authority agreed to take control of the toilets following frequent complaints about the facilities including finding syringes, litter and excrement smeared on the walls.
