Swaffham teenager building own school

TEENAGER Adam Tuck will have more reason than most of his fellow students at Hamond's High School in Swaffham to admire the new setting being provided for their education.

For the 14-year-old Year 10 student, who lives in Swaffham, has been getting a taste of the construction industry by working on the current 10 million-plus rebuild and refurbishment project at the Brandon Road school.

Adam is studying for his GCSEs alongside a BTEC Level 1 Introductory Certificate in Construction (Brickwork). It involves spending one day a week at Lynn's College of West Anglia and every Friday based on site at Hamond's with local contractor Mansell Construction Services.

Mansell has been involved in the work at Hamond's since the project started in July 2006, and Adam is currently working on the revamp of the existing science rooms.

He has been enjoying his hands-on experience in bricklaying and carpentry, and particularly likes the friendly atmosphere created by the staff who are always willing to help him out, a company spokesman said.

Adam would like to become a bricklayer and pursue a career with Mansell when he leaves school in July next year.

He said: "I think it's great that the school have given me this opportunity and I'm enjoying the work. I'm hoping to get an apprenticeship."

In his spare time, he enjoys clay pigeon shooting and helping his family with DIY around the home.

Hamond's work-related learning manager Denise Chapman said: "This wonderful opportunity and the support from Mansell has made Adam much more focused and given him a head start in what he wants to do in life."

Mansell senior site manager John Potter has been impressed with the way Adam contributes on site.

He said: "Adam is a nice, polite lad who is very keen and willing to learn. He frequently asks questions about working in the building trade and I am more than happy to support him."
