Swaffham: Credit crunch pulls plug on pool plan

HOPES of early moves towards getting a swimming pool built in Swaffham on land at the EcoTech Business Park seem to have been crushed by the credit crunch.

Swaffham and District Swimming Pool Association's (SPA) recent annual meeting was told that a company interested in developing a 3.5 million pool and gym complex there has had to pull out because of the current economic climate.

SPA chairman Marian Clements reported that the private enterprise firm, currently building a leisure facility in the Lake District, had withdrawn because it had obligations to complete before it took on anything new.

She told the Lynn News: "This was not entirely unexpected in view of the current financial climate, but nevertheless it was a big disappointment.

"This lifestyle company has not broken off contact altogether and has said it would be happy to point us in the right direction for seeking funding."

Mrs Clements said SPA was still looking towards the private sector for the pool development on two acres of land between the EcoTech Centre and the A47 bypass that Swaffham Town Council bought for 70,000 last October.

And the association was awaiting a report by Parkwood Consultancy Services to Breckland Council following a feasibility study on what was needed for further improving leisure facilities in the area. "Until that's made public we are in limbo," she said.

About 40 people attended the hour-long meeting in the town's Assembly Rooms, where Mrs Clements was re-elected chairman and Stuart Clapton vice-chairman.

The association's other officers are treasurer Nigel Rieger-Ridd, secretary and publicity officer Monika Rieger-Ridd, minutes secretary Pam Buxton and membership secretary Ruth Saunders. Pippa Wade is the town council representative and there are seven other committee members.
