Take care of property, warn police

KEEP your property secure or face the consequences, police are warning.

Norfolk Constabulary is getting tough on people who fail to take simple steps to keep their belongings safe following a number of crimes where owners have been careless.

Some examples include the theft of a vehicle which had been left unlocked, a burglary where a window was left open, the theft of a bike left unlocked and theft from a vehicle where items had been left on display inside.

Superintendent Jim Smerdon said: "Many of these opportunities arise because people remain ignorant or indifferent to the risks of unguarded property.

"This ranges from momentary distraction when handbags are stolen from unwary shoppers to a failure to lock doors and windows of vehicles and property. "Sometimes it is naivety, sometimes forgetfulness or carelessness, but whatever the case, there are consequences when people have their belongings stolen.

"It's important to note that insurance companies have the right to request details of crimes that are reported and we have a duty to share this information with them on request.

"If the crime is as a result of carelessness or irresponsibility they may refuse to pay out. They quite reasonably expect you to take proper precautions.

"Not only is there the issue of having a stranger creating personal misery by stealing your property, there is also the huge inconvenience it can cause.

"For example, cards from a stolen wallet or purse need replacing, the theft of a bike or vehicle could cause mobility problems or be off the road to make repairs and there's the upset created by the realisation irreplaceable personal items have been taken.

"We are not responsible for locking your property away safely, you are. Do take care of your belongings and don't give thieves the opportunity to make an easy steal.

"It is unfortunate and frustrating that people fail to listen to the advice, but a few seconds consideration and care can save an awful lot of hardship and time wasting later on."

Tips on how to avoid becoming a victim:

l Close the windows and sunroof, lock the doors and activate any security devices when leaving your vehicle unattended;

2 Park with care, particularly at night or if you are leaving the vehicle for a long time. If possible, park in a busy, well-lit area;

3 Do not leave cash, credit cards, cheque book, mobile phones, vehicle documents or other valuables on display in your property or vehicle. If you have no choice but to do so, make sure they are hidden well out of sight before you begin your journey – thieves may be watching you park;

l Never leave your keys in the car when you leave it, even for a second – treat them as you would your cash and credit cards;

l Keep your bicycle securely locked;

l Make sure your vehicle keys are kept in a secure place at home and at work – burglars have been known to break into houses and offices to steal car keys;

l Carry your bag close to your body, if possible with the opening towards your body;

l Look after your personal possessions and valuables such as cash, mobile phones or I-Pods when out. Be aware of your surroundings, keep their use discreet and put them away after use.
