Taste of opera for Swaffham area schools
SWAFFHAM area schools are getting a taste of the theatre in a project combining opera, Macbeth and hit song Mack the Knife.
Pupils from Necton, Narborough and Great Dunham have been chosen to take part in the Norfolk Schools' Opera Project with Norwich's Theatre Royal.
Year Six teacher Sandra Simm, of Necton Primary School, said 26 ten and 11-year-olds in her class were already involved in workshops and training with opera professionals in preparation for a show to be staged in December.
Next month, the children also have two trips to the Theatre Royal planned to see the Glyndebourne production of Verdi's Macbeth and receive a backstage tour.
The youngsters have already written their own lyrics to the tune of Mack the Knife.
"Their version relates to the witches in Macbeth and they have written it as a cauldron song," said Mrs Simm.
More writing to themes chosen from the play is under way. Poems on the theme of betrayal in friendship could become songs in the pupils' 15-minute slot in the production of Macbeth at the Theatre Royal on Sunday, December 9.
The school was very keen to take part in the Breckland Council-backed project when approached by the theatre's educational link officer, Mr Jason Raper.
Mrs Simm added: "We were lucky enough to be chosen and the children are so excited."
