Teen secures funding for Swaffham Internet café

SWAFFHAM Community Centre will soon be boasting an Internet café which can be used by all ages for surfing the worldwide web.

And it is being made available thanks to the enterprise of Swaffham teenager Cameron Wood, who successfully applied for a grant of about 3,500 from Norfolk Youth Fund for the purpose.

The money is paying for four permanent computer terminals, offering free access to the Internet, to be installed in the present caf at the Campingland centre.

And people with laptops will also be able to take advantage of the centre's new wireless connection.

Cameron (13), a member of Youthie, the town's youth club which meets at the community centre, applied for the grant with help from the Iceni Partnership, which is based there.

The grant will pay for the four machines and their running costs for about two years and after that the partnership will continue to operate them.

Partnership manager Dennis Tallon said the computers would make the caf an even livelier place and a hub of activity. Cabling work has been carried out this week and it is planned to have the new facility running next week.

"We hope that it will bring in youngsters to do research for their homework and other activities and to keep in contact with their friends," he said.

Mr Tallon said that although money from the youth fund was paying for the new computers and connections, people of all ages would be able to use them free of charge.

"Initially, the computers will be available Mondays to Fridays – but we are looking with the community police to see if we can extend the hours over the weekend, although we haven't got that funding yet," he said.
