Ten crews fight Northwold blaze

More than ten fire appliances with back-up support yesterday tackled a major blaze in a large farm building at Northwold.

The call to Hillview Farm in Thetford Road initially came in at 11.26am as a tractor on fire – but it soon escalated as the flames spread to a farm building measuring about 40 metres by 20 metres.

About five fire appliances, a water carrier, a chemical incident unit, a specialist water foam unit and a control centre were sent to the scene as the fire spread and threatened farm machinery and straw in the building.

At one stage, about 60 per cent of the building was said to be involved and firefighters in breathing apparatus were tackling the blaze with water jets.

Fire officers requested that police were brought in to control traffic flow past the scene.

At 2.30pm, good progress was reported as the firefighting was scaled down and relief crews from Dereham and Attleborough arrived to handle the dampening down operation.
