Terrington £250,000 sports facility on hold
VOLUNTEERS behind a new £250,000 sports facility in Terrington St Clement are pushing ahead with the scheme despite a planning setback.
The Parish Pavilion Action Committee Terrington (PPACT) has been working tirelessly to find funding for a replacement sports pavilion at the memorial playing field in Churchgateway for more than a year.
A number of grants have already been secured and last week the group was celebrating the news it will receive a 30,000 boost from WREN (Waste Recycling Environmental Limited), bringing its fundraising total to around 220,000 to date.
But an application submitted to West Norfolk Council in November was officially withdrawn at the beginning of January after architects woking on the project were warned of a number of objections raised during the consultation period.
Council planning officer Mr Merv Broughton said in a report: "We have grave concerns that the proposal site is the 'best' site for the new building, as it is considerably larger than the existing one."
The report also reveals that police made "strong representations" about the development and the council's landscape officer was likely to request refusal due to its position and the close proximity of trees.
Now, in the latest development, committee chairman Mr Andrew Hornigold, of Chapel Road, said the withdrawal was only a temporary setback and it was full-steam ahead.
"There are one or two things which have not been brought up with us before, but it is nothing that can't be overcome. Rather than have the application thrown out, we decided to withdraw it and get things straightened out first time around. We hope to get the application back in within the next six weeks," he explained.
The existing pavilion, built in the 1940s, will be demolished to make way for the new facility which, once approved, will eventually provide new changing rooms, showers, storage area, toilets, a kitchen and community rooms which will be available for non-sporting groups.
