Terrington's Anne sheds 5 stones in year

DETERMINED members of a Terrington St Clement weight-loss group have shed more than 150 stone in the last 12 months.

At a time when many are fighting the festive flab, the super-slimmers are leading the way in the search for a healthier and happier life.

The Slimming World group is run by Charlotte Norris (33), of Wisbech, who decided to help others with their weight battles after shedding three stone herself.

She said: "Losing weight can not only bring massive health benefits, but also give an amazing confidence boost which can lead to all sorts of things!

"I want to help other people because I know what a difference losing weight can make to your life. Since we began healthy eating my whole family has benefited."

Mrs Norris said she was proud of the whole group, which has around 40 members, but presentations were made to some outstanding achievers at the end of the year.

The Woman of the Year award went to 43-year-old Anne Mason, of Walpole St Peter, who slimmed from a size 26 to a slinky size 12 after shedding an impressive four stone 12lb in the last 12 months.

Only last year Mrs Mason was known as "fat Annie", but with the help of the group she stayed motivated and has seen a marked improvement in her asthma as a result.

In 2006, Mrs Mason lost her husband Percy to a long-term illness and the stress caused her to lose more than three stone in just six months before joining the group last January.

She said: "I think it was the stress of losing him that caused me to lose the weight. I thought, if I can lose three-and-a-half stone I can lose a bit more. Before I lost my husband I was about 19 stone 11lb and now I'm around 12 stone.

"I really enjoy the meetings – it's a lovely group and we share tips and encourage each other."

Terrington St Clement pensioner Brenda King (76) scooped the Greatest Loser accolade after shedding nearly five stone – despite being disabled and unable to exercise.

Mrs King, who suffers from severe chronic arthritis and other health problems, said she was only able to walk around her house and had to use either her motorised buggy or wheelchair on trips out.

"I wish I had lost the weight 20 years earlier, but it's never too late. I would recommend it to anyone. Having people there of all age groups, supporting you is fantastic. Everybody is very friendly and helpful and there is never any criticism," she added.

The honour of being named Miss Slinky went to Mrs Clare Nichols (34), of Clenchwarton, while super-slimmer Tracy Groves (35), who has maintained her four-stone weight-loss for more than a year, was awarded the Top Target Member prize.

The group meets at Terrington St Clement Primary School every Wednesday evening. For more information, contact Mrs Norris on 01945 467548.
