A woman and her family have been fundraising to thank the surgeons who successfully removed her rare brain tumour last month.
Lucinda Knight, 22, underwent major surgery to remove a tumour at the centre of her head two months after a problem was highlighted by optician.
Miss Knight was treated for a benign papillary tumour in the pineal region by consultant neurosurgeons Ramez Kirollos and Thomas Santarius in Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.
Amazingly, she spent just four days in hospital and is recovering well at home in Terrington St John.
Miss Knight with parents Elaine and Kevin, siblings Joshua and Sarah-Jane and boyfriend Liam Flatters raised £1,676 at a busy coffee morning and sale on Saturday to thank the hospital’s neurology department.
Miss Knight, who is delighted with the fundraising total, said: “The surgeons were amazing. I can’t thank them enough for what they have done and how quickly and efficient it was.”
The 22-year-old went to the Boots Opticians store in Wisbech at the end of November after she began to suffer vision problems.
But her symptoms returned at the start of December when she experienced double vision and head rushes.
The opticians referred her to Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital but she was transferred to Addenbrooke’s after the tumour was found in an MRI scan.
Miss Knight had her first operation on December 18 when surgeons removed a section of the tumour and eased the pressure of brain fluid.
The family returned to the hospital after Christmas when they were informed that Miss Knight needed an operation.
On January 16, Miss Knight spent about five hours in theatre as the surgeons removed the whole tumour, which was the size of a thumb nail.
Her mother Elaine said: “We are really grateful and indebted to the surgeons.
“It is really nice to be able to say thank you. We are over the moon to have raised £1,676.
“We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported us.”
Miss Knight will have to return for a scan in April. Although she is suffering from double vision and sleep problems, this is hoped to improve in time.
