Thieving petrol station worker claimed he was victimised
A Fairstead man working in a petrol station who stole money from his employer claimed he had been victimised by the company, Norwich Crown Court was told on Friday.
Andrew Barrett, (49) of 20 Copperfield, admitted five specimen counts of theft from Anglia Regional Co-op between September 4 and October 2 2006. The total amount involved was 800.
He was sentenced to a 12-month community order and told he must complete 150 hours unpaid work.
The court heard that customers at the filling station in Elm Road, Wisbech, noticed that when goods were scanned the equipment did not bleep and Barrett wrote down the figures beside the till.
He was challenged on October 7 and when he gave no explanation the police were called.
He said he had been keeping records when the automatic scanning machine had not worked.
The court heard he claimed he was being set-up and victimised by the company as stock was being lost through the "rear doors."
He had two previous cautions, one for shoplifting and the other for obtaining a money transfer.
In mitigation, David Owen-Jones said Barrett had not worked for many years before getting the job and he had been ill-suited to it.
His life had been shattered by a car accident in 1991 when three people in another vehicle involved had died.
Barrett had been seriously injured and had been "close to death" for a long time.
Judge Simon Barham told him: "This was a breach of trust."
