Thornham group shuts after 26 years

DWINDLING numbers have led to the closure of a social group that has held regular meetings at Thornham for 26 years.

Second homes and holiday lets are blamed for the decision to close Thormas before the end of the year.

"Half of all the properties in the village are now second homes or holiday lets and with the decline in permanent population it has been difficult to maintain viable numbers," said chairman Mrs Ann Whiting.

She said that at one time there would have been as many as 40 people at their meetings but they had nine at one recent gathering and have attracted as few as six at times.

They are planning one last get-together on Tuesday, December 4, and have invited all former members to attend the finger buffet, starting at 6.30pm for 7pm in Thornham Drill Hall.

Founder member Ann Staveley started Thormas as a women-only club aimed at those who were "too old for youth clubs and too young for over sixties".

At the time, the Women's Institute and Mothers' Union closed and the only social life in Thornham was based on the church, the bowls club and the over-sixties club.

Early meetings were held at the home of Pruney Hull. But as men were invited to join and as the programme built up and numbers grew, Thormas moved to the village hall where it organised a wide range of talks, slide shows, social activities and visits.

Members hope that previous members will join them next month.
