Three men and a dog get honours

THREE police officers and a police dog involved in a dramatic arrest in Welney have been honoured for their bravery.

The officers – Swaffham-based Sergeant Mark Murphy and PC Don Walker and Lynn's PC Simon Coleman and police dog Thor – waded through freezing mud and water against a current and in darkness to make an arrest in September last year.

They were among officers, members of the public and police staff honoured at a Norfolk Police awards ceremony and each received the chief constable's commendations for their "courage and tenacity".

A police statement said: "In some places they were neck deep in water and, on one occasion, completely submerged as they continued to attempt to contain the offender.

"They displayed outstanding dedication and professionalism in extreme conditions."

The suspect had failed to stop for police, then ran off after crashing his car.
