Top author meets her fans

Hundreds of children lined the streets to meet literary superstar Jacqueline Wilson yesterday afternoon.

The author, who has sold more than 20 million children's books in the UK alone, attracted around 400 young readers to the book signing for her latest novel, The Kiss, at Lynn's Watersone's store, in Norfolk Street.

Among the excited bookworms was aspiring novelist Ryan Woods (15), who attends St Clement's High School, in Terrington St Clement.

Ryan, of Grange Road, Wingland, won a national writing competition where children were asked to write a new ending to one of the author's many novels.

His alternate ending for Midnight features in a new book, The Essential Jacqueline Wilson Experience, on sale nationally.

Speaking exclusively to the Lynn News, Jacqueline, who was awarded the OBE for services to children's literature in 2002, said she could not remember visiting the town before, although she had enjoyed trips to Cromer and Wells in the past.

She said she was very impressed with Ryan's writing and his alternate ending was "brilliant."

"I was particularly interested because the book Ryan chose is one of my favourites. It was better than I could have made up," she said.

Jacqueline said she enjoyed meeting and chatting with her young fans. "It keeps me in touch with what children interested in," she said.

Ryan, who enjoyed a special meeting with the author, said: "I wrote my entry in about ten minutes and then forgot all about it. I have finished a short novel and I'm currently writing a longer one," he added.
