Tree planting at Hunstanton orchard
Second phase of planting at Hunstanton Community Orchard
Different generations spent a fruitful morning planting trees at Hunstanton Community Orchard.
Eleven fruit trees were planted in the grounds of the community centre, bringing the total to 74, and two more outside the nearby Sure Start Children’s Centre.
Town council member Kate Dunbar said pupils from the town’s three schools took part along with representatives of local groups including the WI, Northfields Allotments Club, Norfolk Wildlife Trust, Norfolk Ornithologists Association. Local residents also planted trees in memory of loved ones or to be enjoyed by their children in the future.
Pupils of Hunstanton infant and junior schools planted Asian pear trees and Smithdon High School pupils planted a Opal plum tree. The WI planted a Winter Broaden cooking apple tree. Hunstanton Mayor Elaine Clutton planted a London Pearmain apple tree and the allotments club planted an Onward pear tree.
At the children’s centre, Hunstanton Methodist Church sponsored the planting of a mulberry tree and a cherry tree, which will fruit in June before the children start their summer holiday.
A fruiting hedge was donated by the Woodland Trust to support birds and wildlife.
The next event at the orchard is a Blossom Day on Saturday, May 4. Mrs Dunbar thanked West Norfolk Council’s gardeners for digging holes for all the trees.
